What is fluted glass?

Fluted glass is a type of glass with a very characteristic, unusual surface. You will find a repeating pattern of convex and concave grooves that run vertically or horizontally, parallel to each other.

Why is fluting so special? It gives the glass a characteristic look, a beautiful, unusual texture, and at the same time completely changes its functionality. Glass is no longer transparent, so it can be used to separate space, and the amazing play of light you can achieve with this material is virtually impossible to imitate.

Decorative properties and the ability to scatter light are the two features that are most important in the case of ornamented glass.

Where is it most common to find fluted glass in interiors?

  • Glass and glazing in doors, e.g. bathroom or hall doors - allow you to maintain privacy while letting in natural light.
  • Fluted glass can be used to produce lamp shades that create an interesting play of light in rooms.
  • It is also a great material for decorative wall panels for the kitchen or bathroom - they can be coloured or completely transparent.
  • You can often find fluted glass tops on retro tables, as well as fluted glazing in chests of drawers.

Ornamented glass can also be used on building facades or as part of decorative garden features.

This shows that fluted glass is a versatile material that has its place in interior design.

How does the fluting process work?

Fluted glass is created in a special treatment process, which gives it its characteristic pattern of convex and concave grooves. We can distinguish several methods of producing grooved glass, but the most popular of them is rolling.

This is a traditional method in which a flat sheet of glass is pressed through rolling mills with an appropriate pattern. The rollers have grooved patterns on their surface that are embossed on the glass surface, creating characteristic grooves.

After obtaining the groove pattern, the glass can be further processed, e.g. cut to appropriate dimensions or have the edges polished.

Fluted glass in interiors – why do we use it so willingly?

It ensures privacy

Fluted glass allows light to pass through, but at the same time prevents you from seeing exactly what is on the other side. Therefore, it is often used in glazed doors, some windows or partitions, so that privacy can be maintained in rooms while allowing light to flow through.

It is easy to maintain

Fluted glass is relatively easy to keep clean. Grooving can additionally mask fingerprints and scratches, which makes the glass seem more practical than some other materials, including classic glass, which shows signs of use quite quickly, especially when children or pets live in the house.

Allows you to play with light

Ornamented glass is an excellent material for diffusing light in the interior. Due to the grooves that form the fluting, the light passing through the glass creates interesting effects.

Grooved glass combined with natural light creates unique patterns of reflections, colours, rays and shadows. The ability to creatively manipulate the lighting in a room can be a fascinating adventure for interior designers, architects, but also for people who are not involved in interior design professionally, but who want to spice up their home a little.

Why is fluted glass popular again? Vintage fashion

Contemporary interior design trends increasingly refer to past styles, particularly the second half of the 20th century. Designers look for inspiration in the past, but they write styles anew. Fluted glass fits this trend perfectly, which is why it is currently very popular.

Introducing fluted glass into the interior can add charm and nostalgia, which is attractive to those who like vintage and retro styles. On the other hand, it looks great in modern, minimalist homes.

Fluted glass in industrial interiors

Fluted glass is ideal for industrial interiors due to its raw aesthetic. It is unusual, elegant and at the same time very simple in form and expression. Want to know how to use fluted glass in interiors? Discover our favourite solutions.

Sliding doors with fluted glass

Fluted glass can be used in sliding doors, which are a characteristic element of industrial interiors. We make no secret of the fact that this is our favourite example of the use of ornamented glass in interiors. Fluted glass panels bring a new texture to the interior while allowing light to flow between rooms.

Partition walls

Ornamented glass panels can be used as partition walls, separating different zones within a room. In this way, you can emphasise the character of the interior - industrial or vintage - and at the same time take advantage of the specificity of fluted glass, adding new functionalities to the interior.

Tip: Instead of a typical partition wall, you can use sliding doors. They are great for arranging a mini home office or for covering an alcove, for example.

Glazed furniture

Ornamented glass can also be used as glazed fronts in furniture such as kitchen cabinets or display cabinets. This will add a great deal of originality to the interior, especially if the furniture itself is very designer.

Lighting

Fluted glass can be used for lamp shades, especially for industrial lamps that are popular in the industrial style. Look for such products in online or second-hand furniture shops.
